Description:

This is a very senior position, and we are accordingly looking for an Engineer of the highest calibre. We are looking fora practical person who, whilst maintaining hands-on contact with the technology, is capable of securing the leadingtechnological position of our products.Innovative, capable of radical thought, risk aware, cost sensitive, pragmatic, high energy, self-starting, team player,motivator, ambitious are all attributes demanded by this position. Suitable candidates will have a good directly relevantdegree, and probably a higher degree. It is expected that suitable candidates will have substantial design experience inIndustrial Variable Speed Drives or related industries such as Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS), Uninterruptible PowerSupplies (UPS) or Traction.Reporting directly to the Exec V.P. Technology, the Power Design Manager has responsibility to:Develop the power circuit and component strategy for future products maintaining awareness of technology trends andthreatsDeveloping Design Tools to ensure quality, consistency and re-use of designsProvide direct design input, technical consultancy and leadership to the Power Design Group and associated project teamsPromote continuous improvement in design qualityParticipate strongly within our lively and productive Design Review processWork closely with our Procurement function on Stragetic Supplier selection and assessmentIn addition, and a very important part of the job, the Power Design Manager will be involved in recruiting and developingmembers of the Power design group.The key areas of activity would be in the design of power electronics for high quantities of electrical variable speeddrives. The power range would be 100W through to 1MW. A familiarity with selection and evaluation of power switchingdevices including IGBTs, MOSFETs, thyristors etc, together with the associated power circuit components, gate drive,protection circuits, as well as transformer and other (power) magnetic design, would be essential. Candidates should alsobe able to produce designs that meet relevant safety and EMC regulations. A good understanding of the operatingprinciples of induction and permanent magnet motors is also important.
