Our client, one of the UK's leading DIY retail organisations is looking to appoint a high caliber Occupational Health Safety & Fire Manager to be based in their head office in Surrey, on a short term contract.Role SummaryTo optimise the contribution of each employee through the promotion of health, prevention of illness, injury and reduction of health hazards thereby supporting the business in achieving its goals. To manage and develop a first class Occupational Health and Safety department (OHSD) which through its advice and support role has tangible business benefits.Responsibilities*Advise divisions and departments on the implementation, development & management of occupational health safety & fire services to ensure best practice and value for money.*Manages & develops the Occupational Health Safety & Fire Department to achieve strategic objectives as set out in department targets.*Oversees & co-ordinates all Occupational Health Safety & Fire Department projects & functions to ensure the provision of a first class service to Head Office locations and all sites.*Prepares, develops & evaluates occupational health policies & oversees the development of safety and fire policy to protect and promote the health and well being of all employees.*Monitors and audits standards of Occupational Health, Safety and Fire advice through ongoing performance management, to develop & motivate the team.*Manages the Occupational Health Safety & Fire budget in order to control costs & ensure financial targets are met.*Co-ordinates the recruitment, selection & placement of new risk advisors & facilitates their ongoing training and development to ensure competency to carry out the role.*Interprets the health and safety aspects of health & safety legislation & oversees the fire aspects to make recommendations regarding the practicalities of compliance, to assist the business in fulfilling its obligations to employees.*Assists line management in understanding key risks to the business and provides via appropriate risk management groups cost effective suggestions to control and reduce risk*Passionate about meeting customer and company expectations.*A strategic developer and communicator who is able to influence at Board level.*A natural leader who inspires and motivates.*Able to communicate in a compelling and commercially aware style the business benefits of managing risk.*Clear ability to work cross-functionally across related disciplines.Desirable Qualifications and Competencies*Nationally recognised qualifications in Occupational Health & Safety to post graduate diploma level/NVQ5.*Membership of a professional body e.g. (MIOSH).*(Desirable) Effective registration with the UK Central *Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC) under the terms of the Nurses, Midwives & Health Visitors Act 1979.*(Desirable)Competency based fire prevention qualifications.*5 years experience of a commercial environment, 2 of which are at management level.*Excellent communication skills with a flair for team building, team work and performance management. *Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety legislation and its practical implementation.
